Health IT is the application of information technology in the clinical setting to enhance the quality, accessibility, and cost effectiveness of healthcare.  The healthcare industry is among the fasting growing segments of the economy. The implementation of information technology in the healthcare has led to the creation of the electronic medical record and electronic health records.  Clinical Healthcare Information Technology is a specialized segment of the industry requiring expertise in clinical healthcare and information technology.

The Health Information Technology Professional Certificate is designed for practicing IT professionals and clinicians looking to expand their knowledge in the interdiciplinary domain of Electronic Health Records and Health IT. The purpose of Health IT is to improve the quality of patient care, lower its costs, and make healthcare more accessible.

Certificate Requirements

The Department of Applied Computing & Engineering Technology offers two tracks for individuals interested Health IT:

Computing Track

The prerequisite requirement for the computing track is completion of an AAS degree in a computing-related field (i.e., Information Technology) or a BS/BA degree in a computing-related area (Computer Science/Management of Information Systems).

Successful completion of the following courses (Total - 13 credits):  

  • AHMS 144 Medical Terminology
  • AHMS 156 Medical Billing Fundamentals
  • HIT 101 Introduction to Health IT
  • HIT 265 Electronic Health Records in Medical Practice
  • NRGS 101 Introduction to Nursing

Health Professions Track

The prerequisite requirement for the computing track is completion of an AAS or BS degree in a clinical health professions-related field (i.e., Nursing) and completion of CSCI 172 Introduction to Computer Modeling or equivalent.

Successful completion of the following courses (Total - 15 credits):  

  • CSCI 240 Databases & SQL
  • HIT 101 Introduction to Health IT
  • HIT 265 Electronic Health Records in Medical Practice
  • ITS 150 Cisco Networking I
  • ITS 210 Network Operating Systems: Desktop
